Spam Texts: How to Stay Protected
If you have a mobile phone, you’ve received spam text. There’s no ifs, ands, or buts about it. Spam texts are practically unavoidable and such a nuisance.
More than just cluttering up your phone, they can pose a real security threat. They seem impossible to dodge, but here are a few tips to clarify exactly what spam texts are, why you’re receiving them, and how to avoid them in the future.
What Are Spam Texts?
Any unwanted message sent to your phone from an unknown or suspicious number qualifies as a spam text. The objective of a spam text could be anything from attempting to sell a product or service to blatant scams aimed only at stealing your personal info.
Unfortunately, phone numbers are connected to so many pieces of our daily lives that it’s easy to end up on these lists without even realizing it.
How Do Phone Numbers End Up on Spam Lists?
1. Data Breaches. Hackers can access and sell personal information once devices are compromised.
2. Signing Up for Online Services. Companies can sell your information that you might have provided as part of a contest or discount on a purchase.
3. Social Media and Public Profiles. If your phone number is visible then it’s open to being swiped by a scammer.
4. Automated Bots. Highly efficient bots can randomly generate numbers, cycling through until they hit an active one (yours).
How to Recognize Spam Texts
Unknown Senders
As a rule, always question unknown numbers.
Too-Good-To-Be-True Offers
Sorry but you didn’t win that luxury bag or 10 day tropical cruise, and nor will you by just completing a few easy forms.
Suspicious Links
Always hover your mouse over the link before clicking and never click a link received from an unknown sender.
Urgent Language
There’s no fire and if there was an issue with your bank account, the bank wouldn’t be letting you know via a text from an unrecognized number.
Risks of Spam Texts
1. Phishing Scams. Be aware and never provide personal or financial information to anyone via text.
2. Malware. You never know what is lurking beyond a link. Remember that malicious links can install malware that allows scammers to steal data from your device.
3. Financial Loss. You might unknowingly respond to spam texts from premium-rate numbers that could result in unwanted charges on your phone bill.
How to Handle Spam Texts
1. Don’t Respond.
It’s simple but it works. Never reply to spam texts, even if they offer an option to “unsubscribe,” which only confirms that your number is active (and could lead to even more spam).
2. Block the Number.
It might not stop all spam but it’s a start and will help reduce the number of messages from specific spammers.
3. Report Spam.
Your carrier will most likely investigate and take action against spammers.
4. Use a Second Number.
Secure yourself a temporary phone number for online forms or promotions. Hushed allows you to use a separate number, so your real number remains private and safe.
5. Install a Spam Filter.
Some apps offer spam filters that promise to detect and block suspicious messages before they reach you.
As much as a nuisance as spam texts are, it helps to know how spammers are able to access your personal number in the first place. By following these tips, you can be better equipped to protect yourself against potential cyber attacks.
