669 is a California area code that serves San Jose and the surrounding areas. It is an overlay for original code 408, which was one of the first North American Numbering Plan area codes created in 1947.
The NANP was created to standardize telephone dialling formats in the United States and Canada. It divided the territory and assigned each region a three-digit prefix, which is known as an “area code.”
Each individual telephone number in the United States and Canada is assigned a seven-digit telephone number. These consist of a three-digit central office code or “exchange code,” plus a four-digit station number. The seven-digit number strings are unique only within their respective area codes; they can be repeated in others.
The area code, central office code and station code together form a complete 10 digit telephone number.
Seven-digit (local format) allows a caller to dial a local number without including its area code. With the introduction of area code 669 to split the existing code 408, ten-digit dialling became mandatory for San Jose. For international calling, the North American Numbering Plan uses the international code +1.
The introduction of code 669 occurred on November 20, 2012, and caused 10-digit dialling to become mandatory in the area. Prior to this time, 7-digit dialling was still possible.
Counties within this code include Santa Clara County and Northern Santa Cruz County.
Locations covered by area code 669 include: Campbell, Cupertino, Gilroy, Los Gatos, Milpitas, Morgan Hill, Palo Alto, San Jose, Santa Clara, San Martin, Saratoga, and Sunnyvale.
Locations covered by 669 all fall within the pacific time zone. San Jose (officially known as the City of San José) is a large city located within "Silicon Valley." This area is the primary technology hub within the USA and is centered around the Bay Area. San Jose has a population of just over 1 million residents.
