Missouri 816 numbers were created by the North American Numbering plan in 1947. 816 numbers covered the western half of Missouri, and 314 was created to cover the east. This was further split up again in 1951and again in the 1990s as home and cell phones became more popular.
Other areas covered by 816 include Blue Springs, Gladstone, Grandview, Independence, Lee's Summit, Liberty, Platte City, Raymore, Raytown, St., Joseph, and Kearney.
The NANP is responsible for formatting telephone numbers in the US and Canada. That numbering plan (area code + seven-digit local number) is still used today! All phone companies follow the same format, for both cell phones and landlines. Notably, Mexico does not observe the NANP.
Seven-digit (local format) calling allows a caller to dial a local number without including its area code. However, in most of the US and Canada, 10-digit dialing is mandatory, because most locations use multiple area codes. However, Kansas City is one of the largest areas that 7-digit calling is still available.
For international calling, the North American Numbering Plan uses the international code +1. To dial a Kansas City number, the caller would enter the following format: +1 816 xxx xxxx.
