Looking for a phone number other than San Francisco?

Need a second or temporary 628 area code number in a nearby city? In addition to San Francisco, Hushed services and includes Novato, San Anselmo, South San Francisco, and San Rafael.

Area code 628 serves San Francisco, California. Locations covered by this area code include San Francisco County and its northerly neighbor Marin County.

628 also includes the north-eastern section of San Mateo County which overlays area code 415. This was one of the original North American Numbering Plan area codes deployed in 1947.

The goal of the NANP was to standardize telephone dialling formats in the United States and Canada. It divided the territory and assigned a three-digit prefix, an "area code," to each region.

Each individual telephone number in the United States and Canada is assigned a seven-digit telephone number. These comprise a three-digit central office code or “exchange code,” plus a four-digit station number. These seven-digit strings are unique only within their respective area codes.

The area code, central office code and station code together form a complete 10 digit telephone number.

Seven-digit (local format) allows a caller to dial a local number without including its area code. In most of the US and Canada, 10-digit dialling is mandatory for both landlines and cell phone numbers. For international calling, the North American Numbering Plan uses the international code +1.

The overlay between them means that both area codes 628 and 415 cover the same region. This includes Larkspur, Mill Valley, Novato, San Anselmo, San Francisco, and San Rafael.

The 628 area code was deployed as a new overlay for 415 on February 21st, 2015. Its debut made ten-digit dialling mandatory in this region. Prior to that time, callers could still use 7-digit dialling. San Francisco was one of the last cities in North America to switch to 10-digit dialling.
