619 is a California area code serving San Diego County. Area code 619 was created as a split from the original 714 area code. It was put into service in 1947 with the implementation of the North American Numbering Plan.

The goal of the NANP was to standardize telephone dialling formats in the United States and Canada. It divided the territory and assigned each region a three-digit prefix, an “area code.”

Each individual telephone number in the United States and Canada is assigned a seven-digit telephone number. These consist of a three-digit central office code or “exchange code,” plus a four-digit station number. These seven-digit strings are unique only within their respective area codes.

The area code, central office code and station code together form a complete 10 digit telephone number. This applies to both landline and cell phone numbers.

Seven-digit (local format) allows a caller to dial a local number without including its area code. In most of the US and Canada, 10-digit dialling is mandatory. For international calling, the North American Numbering Plan uses the international code +1.

Area code 619 serves as an overlay to the 714 area code. 619 was first put into service in 1982.

The 619 area code includes the following locations: Alpine, Bonita, Chula Vista, Coronado, El Cajon, Imperial Beach, La Jolla, La Mesa, La Presa, Lakeside, Lemon Grove, Mission Valley, National City, Rancho San Diego, San Diego, Santee, and Spring Valley. 619 has an additional overlay code, 858, which also serves the combined area.

The city of San Diego is located on the coast of the Pacific Ocean, approximately 120 miles south of Los Angeles. San Diego is adjacent to the US/Mexico border, directly across from Tijuana. Major industries in San Diego are international trade, manufacturing, military training and defence, and tourism.

Popular points of interest include Seaworld San Diego, Balboa Park, the Gaslamp Quarter and the San Diego Zoo. Visits to Pacific beaches and whale watching are popular pastimes for San Diegans. San Diego 619 is located within the Pacific time zone.
