Pittsburgh Area Code 412

Area code 412 is a Pennsylvania area code that serves the city of Pittsburgh. It also serves most of the surrounding Allegheny County, and portions of Washington and Westmoreland Counties.

412 is one of the original area codes created in 1947 as part of the North American Numbering PlanThis plan was implemented to format phone numbers throughout the US and Canada.

Each individual telephone number in the United States and Canada is assigned a seven-digit telephone number. These seven-digit sequences are unique only within their respective area codes. The can be repeated in other area codes. The area, central office, and station code form a complete 10 digit telephone number. This applies to both cell phone and landline numbers.

Seven-digit (local format) allows a caller to dial a local number without including its area code. In most of the US and Canada, 10-digit dialling is mandatory. For international calling, the North American Numbering Plan uses the international code +1.

To dial a Pittsburgh number internationally, the caller would need to enter the number as +1 412 xxx xxxx.

The 412 code originally served western Pennsylvania including Pittsburgh. Area code 412 was split in 1998, and the region was overlaid by area code 724. In 2001, area code 878 was created and added as an overlay as well.

Locations covered by area code 412 include: Bethel Park, Carnegie, Clairton, Coraopolis, Duquesne, McCandless Township, McKees Rocks, McKeesport, Monroeville, Mount Lebanon, North Versailles, Oakmont, Penn Hills, Pittsburgh, Plum, Ross Township, Shaler Township, Turtle Creek, Upper St. Clair, and West Mifflin.

Pittsburgh is the second-largest in Pennsylvania (after Philadelphia), and the 27th-largest city in the United States. It’s nicknamed "the Steel City" for its history in the steel industry. Pittsburgh is also called the "City of Bridges" because it has more than 440 bridges. It is located within the Eastern Time Zone.
